Underwriting appetite

Catlin writes a portfolio of protections for writers of direct marine and aviation business. This is an account that the company has written for many years. Marine protections can be offered to direct writers of London market business and also indigenous books from countries worldwide. The aviation sector of the account encompasses both London market and domestic and regional insurers of airline and non-airline business, with underwriters considering protections on an industry loss basis or UNL basis. Space risks can also be considered.

Senior Underwriter

Tony began his career in 1980 as a junior marine and energy claims broker with C.T. Bowring Insurance Brokers Ltd. In 1982 he became a senior marine reinsurance claims broker with Alexander Howden Reinsurance Brokers Ltd. He joined D.E. Hope & Others, syndicate 1009, in 1985 as an underwriting assistant. He was later promoted to assistant excess of loss underwriter then reinsurance manager in 1990. In 1994 he became excess reinsurance underwriter and outwards reinsurance manager. Tony joined CUAL in 2003 as class underwriter for a new Marine and Aviation Reinsurance account and as outwards reinsurance manager.

Underwriter

Jodie graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a BSC (Hons) in Business Systems Modelling. In the same year she started her insurance career at Catlin assisting Caroline Alliss and Tony Lovett on outwards reinsurance purchasing as well as assisting on the Marine and Aviation account. In 2004 she moved to the Marine and Aviation reinsurance account on a full time basis. Jodie received her ACII in 2006 and was promoted to assistant underwriter.

Underwriter

Stephen began his insurance career in 1985 as a trainee broker for Anslow, Wilson and Amery. In 1988 he joined Bell Nicholson Henderson as a marine reinsurance broker. In 1995 Stephen moved over to underwriting, joining Sphere Drake Insurance Co Ltd as an assistant marine reinsurance underwriter.

In 1997, Stephen joined St Paul Re (UK) Ltd., as a deputy marine reinsurance underwriter. He was subsequently appointed in 1998 to manager and senior underwriter, specialising in marine and aerospace reinsurance. He held this position until the closure of St Paul Re in 2002. In the latter half of 2002, Platinum Re was formed out of the St Paul Re platform and Stephen was appointed senior underwriter for Platinum Re (UK) Ltd.

When Platinum Re closed their London underwriting operation in 2006, Stephen joined Wellington Underwriting as a class underwriter. Stephen is now a class underwriter for CUAL writing Marine and Aviation Reinsurance.
