Upstream Energy covers the protection of assets engaged in the exploration and production phase of the energy industry.

Our customer base is extremely varied and diversified, ranging from private individuals with one or two well portfolios to the super major, fully integrated publically listed oil companies with assets scattered across the globe.

Risk selection is paramount to underwriting success in this class of business, as working with hydrocarbons, a potential volatile and hazardous product can result in catastrophic consequences if not managed properly. Many situations can arise from either manmade occurrences or natural disasters.

Property risks are principally written offshore, from small unmanned single structures to multi-platform complexes, major trunklines & intra-field pipeline networks, subsea completions and offshore mobile drilling units.

Property coverage onshore will include but is not limited to land rigs and oil lease property. Construction risks are written for offshore projects only.

Coverage

We offer a broad range of products to assist with risk transfer for our clients; policies are underwritten to protect the many individuals operating within this sector from operators, non-operators, drilling contractors and construction projects.

Policies are underwritten to insure against the risks of physical loss or physical damage to the insured asset, resultant business interruption or loss of hire, control of well and re-drilling expenses. Dependant upon the location of fixed or floating assets, coverage may be extended to include the perils of offshore war, terrorism and catastrophic perils such as windstorm and earthquake.

Senior Underwriter

After graduating from Lancaster University with a BA (Hons) in Economics, Huw spent the first 13 years of his career at Royal & SunAlliance (formerly Royal Insurance) where he was involved in writing the Energy Property, Liability and Marine Hull accounts. Huw moved to the Catlin Group in 2002 as part of the Energy Property and Liability Underwriting team. He joined Wellington in December 2005 as divisional underwriter for the Energy Liability account and was promoted to divisional underwriter for the Energy Property and Liability account in October 2006. He returned to Catlin upon the acquisition of Wellington in December 2006 and was appointed Energy Business Group Leader.

Senior Underwriter

Stephen began his insurance career in 1986 in the marine underwriting agency of the Prudential and Pearl. In 1987 he joined the marine underwriting team of Lloyd’s marine syndicate 855. In 1993 Stephen moved to the Chandler syndicate 483 as assistant underwriter for upstream and downstream energy business. Following the acquisition by ACE and subsequent merger of syndicates, Stephen transferred to Syndicate 2488 as an energy underwriter. In 1999 he joined Newmarket Underwriting as assistant underwriter for marine and energy. Stephen joined CUAL in 2001 as a class underwriter for the energy account.

Underwriter

Matthew graduated from DeMontfort University with a BA (Hons) in Economics. In 1998, he joined the marine underwriting team of Agnew syndicate 672 as an underwriting assistant. In 2000, following the merger of syndicates he moved to the Wellington syndicate 2020 within the marine team. In July 2000, he transferred to the Energy account as an assistant underwriter. In December 2006, following the acquisition of Wellington by Catlin, he joined syndicate 2003 as a Class Underwriter within the Energy team.

Underwriter

Clive began his career in energy and liability insurance as an assistant underwriter in 1984 on syndicate 1009. He progressed to class underwriter in 1986 and by 1995 was appointed deputy of the syndicate, under David Hope.

In 2002 he joined Catlin’s Underwriting Board, moving in 2003 to a position within underwriting operations then in 2005 became a director of Group Operations. In October 2007 he returned to underwrite for the Energy Business Group.

Underwriter

Will Martin began his career in 1990 in the Marine department of the Methuen Underwriting Agency. Following the appointment of Robin Todd as active underwriter in 1995, Will transferred to the energy department to assist in the writing of Upstream and Downstream Energy business.

Between 1996 & 1998 the syndicate went through a period of acquisition by ACE Global Markets & the merger of the Tarquin underwriting agency. In 1999 Will joined Atrium Underwriting to focus solely on underwriting Upstream Energy business. Will joined Catlin in 2003 to underwrite upstream and Downstream business and became a class underwriter in 2006.
