Pharmaceutical Product Liability

We target niche or generic pharmaceutical products manufacturers, biotechnology companies and medical products manufacturers, domiciled in the USA or elsewhere.

Underwriting Appetite

Typically we look at manufacturers with revenues of US$150m to US$4bn
Generic drug manufacturers with a broad spectrum of products. We have an appetite for some of the higher profile litigated classes in this field, for example Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (anti-depressants) or women’s health products; but also look at manufacturers of over the counter medicines and general prescription medicines
Niche ethical drug manufacturers, which specialise in treating the symptoms of illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, crohn’s disease, cancer, AIDS and are involved in pain management
We will consider large orthopaedic products manufacturers and medical products manufacturers, involved in products such as pacemakers, hip, knee, spine replacements, blood collection and monitoring devices. We will also consider insuring suppliers to the hospitals or clinics, oftentimes re-branding sourced products
We are not a major insurer for neutraceutical business

Coverage

We write on claims made (with and without batch cover) and occurrence reported / integrated occurrence wordings
We write both stand alone Product Liability and Umbrella Liability, which can include other coverages, such as General Liability and Auto Liability. We have the ability to write on split occurrence / claims made triggers, so long as the product exposure is on a claims made (or occurrence reported basis)
Typically we write on 1st, 2nd or 3rd excess layers. We are a lead market for this business

Underwriter

After graduating from Hertford College, Oxford, in 1995, Michael joined the casualty facultative department of General Re in London. He worked in a variety of positions and was involved both in the opening of the Manchester branch in 1997 and the FacWorld internet project. In 2002 he was appointed senior underwriter and worked on both the underwriting and development of the global liability book. Michael joined Catlin in August 2004 as a class underwriter.
