Underwriting Management

Paul Brand began his career in the insurance industry in 1982 at Insurance Company of North America in London. He worked in the marine underwriting department, specialising in energy and related risks. In 1987 Paul joined Catlin to underwrite the energy and liability accounts and became deputy underwriter of Syndicate 1003 in 1990 and deputy underwriter of Syndicate 2003 upon its formation in 1996. He was appointed active underwriter of Syndicate 2003 in May 2003 and chief underwriting officer of the Group the same year.

After graduating from the University College of North Wales, Nick Burkinshaw in 1987 joined the underwriting team of syndicate 206, managed by R W Sturge. In 1990 he took responsibility for underwriting the specie book. Nick joined Catlin in 1992 as class underwriter for the specie and fine art accounts. He was appointed underwriting director in 2000 and active underwriter of the Catlin Syndicate in 2006.

Douglas Howat joined Eagle Star in 1985 working in the claims department. In 1987 he moved to the Insurance Company of North America where he gained experience in the marine department. Douglas joined Catlin in London in 1989 as an assistant underwriter, subsequently being appointed class underwriter for the energy and liabilities account and head of the energy research team. He was appointed underwriting director in 2000 and appointed Group underwriting director in 2006.

Matthew Paskin joined the insurance industry in 1982 at Pan Atlantic/Republic UK. He left that company in 1985 to join Lloyd's syndicate 235, E F Williams and Others, where he became the treaty underwriter in 1989. Matthew joined Catlin in London in 1993 as class underwriter for the catastrophe reinsurance account. He was appointed underwriting director in 2000 and an executive director of the Group Underwriting Board in 2006.

Having graduated from Royal Holloway College in London, Andrew McMellin joined Willis Corroon plc's graduate training scheme in 1987. He then joined Willis' London Market Broking unit and was appointed a divisional director in the Casualty Team. Andrew left in 1994 to join M W Drysdale & Others, Syndicate 820, as the liability class underwriter. He joined Catlin in London in November 1999 as class underwriter for non-marine liability business and was appointed underwriting director in January 2003. He was appointed deputy underwriter of the Catlin Syndicate in 2006.

Richard entered the insurance industry in 1983 as a management trainee with Trade Indemnity plc. Later that year he joined insurance broker D R Fleet & Company Limited, where he worked for 13 years as a broker, company director and the company's compliance officer.

Following the acquisition of D R Fleet by Bain Hogg International in 1996, he became a director in Bain Hogg's reinsurance department. In 1997 he joined R E Brown & Others Syndicate 702 at Lloyd's as outwards reinsurance manager, and in 2000 he became deputy underwriter of the syndicate.

When the syndicate was acquired by Markel Corporation he was appointed managing director of Markel International's Professional Indemnity division. He left Markel to become chief operations director of PRI Group plc in July 2002, responsible for PRI's underwriting and operational systems, broker relationships and reinsurance placements.

Richard joined Catlin Group Limited in November 2003 as director of underwriting at the UK Branch of Catlin Insurance Company Ltd.

Jonathan Gale in 1987 joined CNA Reinsurance Co. in London and 2as later seconded to CNA Re in Chicago where he specialised in writing medical malpractice insurance and reinsurance. Jonathan in 1998 joined R F Bailey (Underwriting Agencies) Ltd as deputy underwriter for syndicate 138, and in 2002 he joined Catlin in London to underwrite the medical malpractice and specialty casualty reinsurance account. Jon was appointed underwriting director of Catlin Bermuda in March 2004.
