Most people think about insurance in the context of cover for residential property, vehicles or health. While we do provide insurance for some of these personal lines, along with some off-the-shelf products for small businesses, our specialisation is in creating tailored commercial insurance or reinsurance solutions. This is what we mean when we call ourselves a specialty insurer.
‘Specialty insurance’ covers everything from race horses to fine art, cargo to crops, and aerospace to political risk. Catlin is an industry leader in this field.
Insuring the insurers
Insurers don’t necessarily want to take on all the risk when they decide to issue a policy. Reinsurance allows the primary insurer to share the risk by taking out their own insurance against loss. For example, Insurer A may insure a large commercial development, and ask Insurer B to re-insure part or all of A’s risk. Insurer B becomes the reinsurer.
