Owen Whelan

Owen Whelan started his career in Dublin in 1990 working for New Ireland Assurance Company. Following his qualification as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1995 he was seconded to the general insurance subsidiary, Irish National Insurance, to assist in setting up an internal actuarial department. In this role he performed pricing and reserving reviews of personal and commercial lines of business, and was also involved in modelling outwards reinsurance.

In 1997 Owen joined Zurich Financial Services in the UK and in 1999 was promoted to the position of Strategic Business Unit Actuary with responsibility for supporting the Zurich Municipal division. In 2001 he moved to Zurich London as a pricing actuary working across a range of commercial lines classes of business.

Owen joined Catlin in August 2002 to develop the actuarial support provided to the short tail business groups. Following a number of role changes over the years, he was promoted to UK Chief Actuary in 2009 and in this role manages the UK actuarial team which provides actuarial services to the business underwritten by the UK entities.

Owen is a member of the London Executive Committee and the UK Risk Management Committee.
