Corporate responsibility
We're committed to corporate responsibility, both in the UK and overseas. As well as sponsoring large-scale programmes such as the Catlin Arctic Survey, we also encourage our people to volunteer for local causes and we support individual fundraising efforts.
Environmental responsibility
We take our environmental responsibilities as a business seriously and we encourage our people to follow suit.
Catlin is a member of ClimateWise, a UK insurance sector initiative demonstrating commitment to action on climate change. We also work with The Carbon Neutral Company, a leading carbon offset and climate consulting business. We offset carbon dioxide emissions created by Catlin employees’ business-related air travel, with our ‘offset credits’ being used to finance alternative energy and other environmentally sound projects.
We go out of our way not to go out of our way. Communication between our offices and clients doesn’t have to include travel. We have state-of-the-art video conferencing capabilities in our offices, enabling our employees to hold both internal and external meetings on screen.
We don’t stop there. Following the move to our Gracechurch Street offices, we have an even stronger focus on recycling, with follow-me printing to save paper and a document scanning system which enables employees worldwide to view documents electronically rather than in hard copy.
Community support and charitable donations
We actively encourage our people to get involved in charitable activities and participate in our local community.
Every Catlin person is entitled to a day’s paid leave each year to volunteer for an activity that benefits a charity. We also operate a payroll “Give As You Earn” scheme, whereby we match employee charitable contributions up to £500 a year.
Our people in the UK vote every two years to select a charity partner that will benefit from our help. In 2010/11 we have supported two charities: The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy and the Alzheimer’s Society.
We also have an ongoing relationship with the Sick Children’s Trust, a UK-based charity which provides support and accommodation for the families of children undergoing hospital treatment. Stephen Catlin is Chairman of the Trust and other executives contribute time to the charity.
Catlin is a member company of the Lloyd’s Community Programme which provides educational, training and other forms of support to residents of Tower Hamlets and other East London boroughs. A large number of our people volunteer their time to act as reading and numeracy partners to children through the Programme. We are also a trustee of a local school, St Paul’s Way Trust School in Tower Hamlets and, reflecting our work in helping raise standards at the school, in 2011 we have been shortlisted for a prestigious City of London Dragon Award.
